Beyoncé Knowles (Beyoncé Giselle Knowles) was born in Houston, Texas on September 4, 1981. She is an American R&B singer-songwriter, record producer and actress. Knowles rose to fame in the late 1990s as the lead singer of Destiny's Child and went on to sell over 50 million records worldwide with the group.
Beyoncé's father, Matthew Knowles, manages Destiny's Child. Her mother, Tina Knowles, designs their glittering costumes. Solange Knowles, her sister (they're about 5 years apart), has released her debut album. She dances with her big sister during DC-3 concerts.
She and her group were discovered by Whitney Houston. One of her favorite songs is "Lovefool" by The Cardigans. Her favorite item of clothing is a pair of path work metallic boots. She writes & produces many of the group's songs, including smash hits "Jumpin Jumpin", "Bootylicious", "Nasty Girl", "Independent Women", "Happy Face" and "Apple Pie a la mode".
After a series of commercial successes with the group, Knowles released her debut solo album, Dangerously in Love, in June 2003. The album became one of the most-successful albums of that year, spawning the number-one singles "Crazy in Love" and "Baby Boy". It earned Knowles five Grammy Awards in a single night in 2004, and its reception signaled her viability as a solo artist. The disbandment of Destiny's Child in 2005 facilitated her continued success; she released her second album, B'Day, in 2006, which contained the UK number-one singles "Déjà Vu" and "Beautiful Liar", and the worldwide hit "Irreplaceable". Her third solo album, I Am… Sasha Fierce, was released in November 2008, and spawned the worldwide hit, "If I Were a Boy", and the US number-one hit "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)".
Beyoncé has cited a variety of classic artists who influenced her music. She grew up listening to songs of Anita Baker and Luther Vandross, the latter whom she eventually collaborated with. She was exposed to the jazz music of Rachelle Ferrell, after singing Ferrell's songs during her voice lessons. She also cites influences from American artists Prince, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Selena, Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, Mary J. Blige, Diana Ross, Donna Summer and Tina Turner, with whom the former and latter she co-performed during the 46th Grammy Awards and the 50th Grammy Awards, respectively.
